Picture a posh, proper 1920s British estate. Now picture it exploding into absolute, chaotic hilarity. Written by Sandy Rustin, The Cottage is a murderous, modern feminist farce that takes a traditional drawing-room comedy and turns the speed dial up to eleven. Think Airplane! meets Noël Coward—unapologetically silly, stylish, and incredibly fast-paced. The comedy builds relentlessly as affairs are exposed, murderous plots are hatched, and a web of eccentric characters collide in a storm of absurd revelations.
Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script. We want to see how you play off other actors, your willingness to take risks, and your instincts for group chemistry.
Seeking actors with sharp comedic timing, strong physical comedy skills, vocal stamina for quick-fire banter, and a great British accent.
Character Breakdowns
Note: All characters are British, mid-20s to late-40s, any ethnicity. Ages listed are playing ages and flexible. (All roles and understudy positions are open)
SYLVIA (Female, 30s): A lovely, rash, and hopeless romantic. She starts the show under the beautiful illusion of true love, but triggers the entire night’s chaos when she decides to expose her affair.
BEAU (Male, 30s-40s): Sylvia’s lover (and her husband’s brother). He is perhaps the best-looking man in Britain—stiff-upper-lip, vain, and very traditionally British, but hilariously forced to realize the world is changing around him.
MARJORIE (Female, 30s-40s): Beau’s wife. She is eight months pregnant, deeply pragmatic, salty, judgmental, and a tad spicy. She handles the unfolding chaos with shocking calmness and a love for gossip.
CLARKE (Male, 30s-40s): Sylvia’s husband (and Beau’s brother). A distinguished gent with a lover’s spirit. He is a high-society bon vivant who aims to please, but his kind heart occasionally makes him look like a fool.
DIERDRE (Female, 20s-30s): Beau’s other mistress. An awfully pretty, young, and optimistic nincompoop. She is a hopeless romantic who leads entirely with her heart, fiercely believing the absurd things she says.
RICHARD (Male, 30s-40s): Dierdre’s ex-husband. A mysterious, threatening, yet strangely gentle soul who shows up on a murderous mission to win back his true love. Requires fantastic presence and deadpan delivery.
Auditions will take place on September 9, 2026 @ 6p at the theatre.
